Privacy Policy
Effective 16 July 2026 · Applies to the Magen Android app and this website
The short version
- Magen has no accounts. We never ask for your name, phone number, email, location, or contacts.
- When you scan a link, the link is checked — not you. Nothing we store connects a scan to you or your device.
- Your scan history stays on your phone. You can clear it anytime; uninstalling removes everything.
- No ads, no analytics trackers, no selling of data. There is nothing to sell.
Who we are
Magen is made by Afrigensys, a Nigerian company. This policy explains what the Magen app and the magen.afrigensys.com website do with data, in plain English. Magen is currently in development; this policy describes the app as it is distributed for testing and release, and we will update it if anything changes.
What Magen does
Magen helps you stay safe: it checks links for scams and phishing, keeps verified emergency numbers on your phone, teaches you to recognise common frauds, and lets you check whether a loan app appears on the FCCPC approved lenders list.
What happens when you scan a link
When you scan a link (by pasting it or sharing it to Magen), the app first checks it on your phone using built-in rules. If you are online, the app also sends the link itself — and nothing else about you — over an encrypted connection to our server, which checks it against known-scam databases and Google Safe Browsing.
- We store the link and its verdict (for example "dangerous") so the next person who scans the same link gets a faster answer. This record contains no user identifier, no device identifier, and no account — because none exist.
- Our server infrastructure (Supabase, hosted in London, United Kingdom) keeps standard, short-lived technical logs — such as the IP address a request came from — for security and reliability, as virtually all internet services do. We do not use these logs to identify or profile anyone.
- Google Safe Browsing receives only anonymised, partial fingerprints (hash prefixes) of the link being checked, following Google's privacy-preserving lookup design. It does not receive anything about you. See Google Safe Browsing.
- Text you share to Magen from another app (for example a WhatsApp message) is used only to find the link inside it and scan that link. The message text is not stored on our servers.
What stays on your phone
- Scan history — kept only on your device, clearable in Settings, never uploaded.
- Your chosen state (for the emergency directory) and other settings — stored on the device. We deliberately do not use your location; you pick your state yourself.
- Uninstalling the app deletes all of it.
Notifications
If you turn on the daily safety tip, notifications are delivered through Google's Firebase Cloud Messaging, which uses an anonymous device token. That token is not linked to your identity (we don't know your identity). You can turn notifications off anytime in Settings or in Android's notification settings.
Permissions we do not ask for
Magen does not request your location, contacts, camera, microphone, SMS, or call log. Tapping a number in the emergency directory opens your phone's dialler — the call is made by you, from your dialler, like any other call.
This website
magen.afrigensys.com sets no cookies and runs no analytics. Our hosting provider keeps standard technical request logs for security and operations.
Services we rely on
- Supabase (London, UK) — runs our server and database.
- Google Safe Browsing — link threat checks, via anonymised hash prefixes.
- Public threat feeds (PhishTank, OpenPhish, URLhaus) — we download lists of known scam sites from them; they receive nothing from you.
- Google Firebase Cloud Messaging — delivers notifications, only if you enable them.
- Google Play — distributes the app under Google's own privacy policy.
Children
Magen collects no personal data from anyone, including children. Its content is suitable for a general audience.
Your rights
Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 you have rights over your personal data — including access, correction, and deletion. Magen is built so that we hold no personal data about you in the first place, so in most cases there is nothing for us to hand over or delete. If you believe we hold something about you, or you have any privacy concern, contact us and we will respond. You also have the right to complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update this page and the effective date above. If a change ever means the app starts collecting personal data (for example, optional features in future versions), we will ask for your consent in the app first — not bury it here.
